Sandy Creek Nature Center is a wonderful place to get out and experience nature close to the downtown Athens area and the University of Georgia Campus for all ages, abilities and knowledge levels. There is plenty of free parking and activities for the entire family. The Nature Center is located in the triangle formed by the North Oconee River and Sandy Creek at and including the northern terminus of the North Oconee River Greenway. The Greenway at this point is a fairly level paved track suitable for easy walking, hiking, biking, roller blading, and wheelchairs. Vehicular traffic is restricted. This section of the Greenway has been recently (2024-25) re-paved, repainted and refurbished. Several new features have been included for comfort and convenience: additional trash cans and recycling receptacles, pet clean up stations and trail side benches. The signage has also been replaced and significantly upgraded. In addition to the Greenway, the Nature Center has its own well maintained trail system within the park that covers the spectrum of activity levels from wheelchair accessible boardwalks(when wet, the boardwalk can get very slick and slippery in places, so extra caution should be taken) to moderate activity dirt paths. The center hosts numerous free programs and educational opportunities. There are playgrounds, picnic tables, a gift shop and other amenities. The park staff are all friendly, welcoming and ready to help.

The dirt trails are fairly well maintained and with a bit of planning, one can easily string together 2-3 (Kestrel, Clay Pit and Kingfisher) for a nearly 3-mile hike around the Nature Center, even after rain. But for longer distances, wait at least 2-3 days after a heavy rain to attempt traversing the Levee trail that meanders from the log cabin along the Sandy Creek and North Oconee river confluence, unless youre keen for muddy boots. There are vistas on the aforementioned 'drier' string of trails that one could easily convince themselves they were traversing an Ewok path on the moon of Endor, or navigating through a Lothlorien Forest in Middle Earth.

There are so many different trails and lots of birds to see. There were a fair amount of cars in the parking lot but once I got on the trails, I didn't see anyone. Very nice and easy pace

Sandy Creek nature center is a beautiful place to step away from the busy pace of the city and explore the natural beauty of this hidden gem. The trails are peaceful and easy to access. After a wet season some trails may be impassable because they are in a low lying area. The center itself looks like a fun place to visit and learn about native plants and animals. (I had my dog so I didn’t venture inside) they have a nice newly constructed playground behind the center as well. There is also access to the paved greenway that goes through Athens.

Wonderful local resource for those that enjoy the outdoors but they also have several interactive exhibits indoors as well. We went by during their open house which was very informative. They have some great rainy day activities for kids and families and we've really enjoyed the Planetarium in the past. Definitely recommend stopping by.

Went as a little side trip on our way to North Georgia and it was a cute stop, place had the same atmosphere of the 2000s with quaint decorations and exhibits. Remind me of summer camp as a kid

Very cool place for the kids and adults to explore and learn about the nature around us. Takes about 90 minutes to get through and has some great places to explore within the building. The learning classrooms offer some imagination stations, like a puppet show and a tree house with a book from the library. The main exhibit has some carefully curated animals like turtles and venomous snakes. Lots of fun to see them up close. There's also a cool indoor live apiary full of honey bees at work. This place is definitely worth a visit.

This is a fantastic nature center! The exhibits are hands-on, extremely varied, and interactive. There is an outdoor play area with natural elements that intrigued the kids in a way that most places don’t. The gift shop is cute and nature themed. Highly recommend this center!

I have been here twice now and it is always a pleasure. The nature center is smaller than most paid attractions, but hey it is free! The trails are nice from what I have seen and the staff was also very courteous. It was a great location to practice photography and take in nature.
