This threstle is lovely. Its since been converted into the Firefly Trail which is very nice. The views from each side over the N. Oconee River are great. There are olenty of walkers and joggers and spurs to other trails. It is also very accessible w/ramps from one side. There are also aeveral spurs that are paved down to the pavillion, ball courts and grass patches. We even saw a little deer pouncing through thr woods - it was awesome!

I've never been an active/obsessive REM fan. In eighth grade I remember everyone at school where I lived in Northern California being VERY jealous because my dad took me out of school early to go see them on their Monster tour at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. I love traveling and was pleased to pass by here.

On April 20, 2023, the ribbon cutting ceremony reopened the trestle as part of the Firefly trail. While the trestle has been completely rebuilt, the replacement honors the important place that the trestle has played in Athens history including but reaching much farther back than the April 1983 release of R.E.M.'s first album, Murmur.

I was doing a little geocaching and explored the Murmur Trestle. I got a nice little workout that's for sure. Cool place to check out knowing the significance in music history it has. My only complaint are the plants everywhere! I suggest going during the fall/winter time if you are wanting nice clear pictures of the trestle.

The Murmur railroad trestle is part of the must-do itinerary Athens for original R.E.M. fans. Came down for a college orientation with our son and couldn’t miss the chance to see where it all began. Our kids thought we were crazy at first, but they loved looking at all the vinyl in Wuxtry Records and listening to some great “old” music along the way. Stop for a waffle chicken sandwich and a beer at The National mid-tour and your pilgrimage will be complete!
