I should've read the reviews. We just moved to Athens from a home that we owned to a home that we now rent and we had to leave several things behind, including a variety of tools. We needed a cat door installed and didn't want to go through the hassle of renting the tools, so we called Lowe's and Home Depot in hopes that we could pay them to cut the door. Neither of them did custom jobs, but the gentleman who answered the phone at Lowe's said that I could come to Southern Surplus to get custom cuts. Every time I called these guys with questions, the guys on the phone sounded annoyed that I made them pick up the phone. Which, alright, I get it, nobody wants to work, but it made me feel uncomfortable asking for help, which is a big red flag for me. To add to that, they said they wouldn't cut a hollow door and I needed to buy a solid door (which I found odd because both of the cat doors at our previous house were installed into hollow doors by me, an amateur, without an issue). So, I bought a solid wood door and brought them the instructions and the template from the cat door I had bought. Not only did they not follow the simple, four-step instructions WITH PICTURES, that stated the cat door needed to be cut at the bottom of the door, but the "professional" cut I paid for wasn't even cut straight. I also read some reviews about them not cutting door handles properly and immediately installed the handles before even painting the thing to make sure they worked. Thankfully, they did. But I don't think I'd ever come back to or recommend Southern Surplus. To anyone. How do you mess up a cat door? Edit: this review was originally 2 stars for my all-around disappointing experience. But, it gets worse! So, we just put the door up. In addition to getting the cat door cut, we needed to get the solid door cut to size, and we brought the original door for my bedroom to Southern Surplus so they could cut it exact. My old door was almost flush to the floor, just enough room between it and the carpet to open and close with ease. Now? On the left side (when open), I can fit my foot beneath it. And the right (also when open)? I can barely fit a finger. It's so uneven I don't even think the dude that did it tried. At all. They also chipped the hell out of it. And for a reminder: we dropped the door off at around 10AM and didn't pick it up until 1:30PM (as instructed). So they had all this time to perfect it, and they didn't. Over three hours and this was the best they could do. DO NOT go here, even if you're desperate. You would do a better job with a YouTube video and a rented saw from Home Depot. I was frustrated earlier, now I'm just pissed off.

Would absolutely buy nothing here! I walked in with my daughter as I am building a home looking to spend thousands of dollars on doors and 4 men sat at that front counter twiddling their thumbs NEVER offering if they could help me in any way. Sadly one of them was an older gentleman that should have even taught better! They had the audacity to tell me to a have nice day as I walked out. I would have love to support a local business, but I’ll take my business to Ace!! Everyone wants to sit around for a paycheck and not lift a finger!!!

Need doors? Just go here! This place has more doors than you can imagine. The best part is that their prices are unbeatable. I had the pleasure of dealing with Jeff, and he took great care of me. I told him what I needed; he took the time to find the door and get it framed within a day. Unbelievable service! They also have windows, tiles, boards, trim, siding, and a lot of random things. Must see for yourself! The pictures don’t do justice. Thanks again, Jeff!

Doors are poorly made with no integrity and or pride in workmanship. The sales people are no help and apparently doesn't know 60" is 5'. Then proceeded to charge me more for there mistake. Apparently new owners and or managers will not go back for any of our properties and other projects. Complete joke

Awesome place if you want to save money. It's a task if you just look around by yourself to find what you want, however the employees there are very helpful if you just ask them. If you need odd windows, transoms, side lites, etc. you probably can't beat these guys. We saved a ton of money on our interior and exterior doors and got really good quality as well. I will definitely use them again.

Took six more days than was planned on getting my door and when I did get it had to wait for them to finish it and it looked like something you would have put in a trailer just poor workmanship would have been better offf buying on marketplace

We bought doors from here and had them put in a dog door in the doors. The only person there who had any clue about anything was Jacob. The manager was so rude and unhelpful. We waited 4 days to get doors done after I already paid, yeah dumb me. But they put dog door in wrong and they cut the holes for the handles wrong. So needles to say they ruined the $500 doors I bought. I will NEVER shop here again.
