I visited Hallmark recently, excited to find a Hallmark Mahogany card for my mom—a line known for its beautiful celebration of Black culture. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The Mahogany cards were nowhere to be found on the shelves. When I asked for help, a Black employee graciously went to the back and returned with a basket of completely unopened Mahogany cards. I stood at the counter flipping through the cards while feeling a mix of frustration and disappointment. Why weren’t these cards given the same visibility as others? It felt unjust that a product specifically designed to affirm Black voices and experiences was hidden away, almost as an afterthought. Representation matters. These cards deserve to be displayed prominently, just like every other card line. Making them accessible sends a message of inclusivity and respect—not just to me but to every shopper who walks through your doors. To the management and leadership of this store: I encourage you to reflect on how this situation can be improved. Everyone deserves to see products that affirm their identity represented equally and proudly in your store. I hope to return and find Mahogany cards easily accessible on the shelves—where they belong. Until then, I’m sharing this experience to encourage meaningful change. Representation isn’t optional; it’s essential.
